Sus 39 695 habitantes (INE 2021) ​ constituyen el 44,7 % de la población provincial. El término municipal tiene una superficie de 271,77 km², ​ con una densidad de 146,06 hab./km². Situada a unos 1063 m de altitud, es la segunda capital de provincia más alta, tras Ávila.
